Dalugama is the stretch of Kandy Road, the A1, between Kelaniya and Kiribathgoda, within the Kelaniya Divisional Secretariat of Gampaha District, Western Province. It lies about 9 km from Colombo Fort by road, with Kelaniya just to the south and Kiribathgoda a little further north.
Dalugama is best known as the home of the University of Kelaniya's main campus, at 218 Kandy Road, which grew out of a Buddhist monastic college founded in the 19th century before becoming a full university in 1978. Kelaniya Raja Maha Vihara, a temple on the banks of the Kelani River famous for its January Duruthu Perahera, is a few kilometres to the south, and Nawaloka Hospitals has a branch on Kandy Road at Kiribathgoda.
Kelaniya railway station on the main line is the nearest stop for rail commuters. The A1 through Dalugama carries heavy traffic in both directions, and congestion around the Kiribathgoda junction is a regular feature of the peak-hour commute. The Central Expressway begins a short drive north at Kadawatha, though its Kadawatha–Mirigama section is still under construction.
Everyday shopping is concentrated around Kiribathgoda, which has supermarkets, a bus stand and a wide range of shops within a couple of kilometres, alongside smaller supermarkets closer to the university on Kandy Road itself. Schools nearby include Sri Dharmaloka College and Viharamahadevi Balika Vidyalaya, and hospitals include Nawaloka's Kiribathgoda branch and the government-run Kiribathgoda Base Hospital. The Kelani River runs close to Dalugama, and parts of the wider river basin flooded in November 2025, which is worth checking before buying.
There is no single large development project specific to Dalugama; its infrastructure story is mostly about the roads and the river around it, including ongoing work on the Central Expressway to the north and periodic flood management along the Kelani River following the November 2025 flooding. New residential developments in the area are listed further down this page.
Dalugama tends to suit university staff and students at the University of Kelaniya, along with commuters who want A1 access close to Colombo without living in the city itself. It is also a common search area for Buddhist families drawn to living near Kelaniya Raja Maha Vihara.
