Gampaha is the district town of Gampaha District, Western Province, on the Main Line railway about 27 km north of Colombo by road. The Gampaha Municipal Council administers the town, which sits between Yakkala to the east and Ganemulla to the west. It grew up around the railway line built through the area in the 1860s and became the seat of Gampaha District when the district was separated from Colombo District in 1978.

The town is best known for the Henarathgoda Botanic Gardens, laid out in 1876 beside the Attanagalu Oya, where the first rubber tree in Sri Lanka was planted in 1867 under British trials to introduce the crop from the Amazon. The old Henarathgoda railway station building beside the current one is a protected archaeological monument from the same period. The area once served as a cinnamon-collection centre under Dutch rule and is now a district administrative centre with several government offices.

Gampaha is the 15th station out of Colombo Fort on the Main Line, with services averaging about 34 minutes and a fastest scheduled journey of around 23 minutes. By road the town is roughly 27 km from Colombo Fort and about 20 km from Bandaranaike International Airport. There is no expressway interchange in Gampaha itself: the nearest operating access point is the Kadawatha interchange on the Outer Circular Expressway, about 13.5 km away. A Gampaha interchange is planned on the future Central Expressway, but that Kadawatha-Mirigama section only resumed construction in September 2025, targeted for mid-2028, so it remains under construction.

Daily needs are covered within the town: Bandaranayake College, St Peter's College, Holy Cross College and Rathnawalee Balika Maha Vidyalaya are among the established schools, and the Gampaha District General Hospital and the smaller Sethma Hospital serve residents, alongside an Ayurveda teaching hospital in nearby Yakkala. Cargills Food City and Arpico Super anchor the main street's supermarkets, and long-running names such as Perera & Sons and the Swiss Lanka Hotel serve as established cafes and restaurants. The botanic gardens double as the main green space, a short walk from the station.

Work on the Central Expressway's Kadawatha-Mirigama section, which lists a proposed Gampaha interchange, resumed on 17 September 2025 after a multi-year pause, targeted for mid-2028. The district was also among the hardest hit when Cyclone Ditwah struck in late November 2025: floodwater filled the ground floor and outpatient department of the District General Hospital, a reminder that parts of the district flood in heavy weather. New residential developments in and around Gampaha are listed further down this page.

Gampaha tends to suit commuters who work in Colombo but want a district town with its own schools, hospitals and shops, along with government employees posted to the district offices here. Families weighing established schools are a common search group, as are buyers drawn to larger plots further from central Colombo while still keeping a direct rail link to Fort.
