Matale is a major city in the Central Province and the administrative capital and largest city of Matale District. It lies in a broad, fertile valley at the heart of the Central Highlands, about 364 m above sea level, with the Knuckles Mountain Range around it.

The area has a long history. At the Aluvihare Rock Temple, on the northern side of the city, the Pali Canon was first written down on palm leaves in 29 BCE. Matale was also the site of a major battle in 1848, when the Matale Rebellion began and the British garrison in Fort MacDowall was besieged.

Visitors and residents know Matale for its temples, including the Aluvihare Rock Temple and the Sri Muthumariamman Temple, and for the herbal and spice gardens of the district. It is the second largest urban and most populated city in the Central Province after Kandy.
