It is famous for the Royal Botanic Gardens of Peradeniya, on a slope of the Mahaweli River, which attract many visitors from Sri Lanka and abroad. The University of Peradeniya, with buildings in mixed colonial and traditional Sri Lankan and South East Asian styles set among hill-country greenery, is another defining feature. The Department of Agriculture and a Sri Lanka Telecom training centre are also here.
West of the suburb lies the small historic town of Kadugannawa.
