The South Coast here covers the beach strip from Ahangama, in Galle District, through Weligama to Mirissa, both in Matara District, roughly 130 to 150 km from Colombo along the A2. The three towns run along the coast road as a continuous strip rather than a single town.

Ahangama, Kabalana and Midigama are known for surf breaks and for traditional stilt fishermen. Weligama is known for its sandy bay, the offshore Taprobane Island, and the Kusta Raja Gala, a carved rock relief dated to between the 6th and 9th centuries. Mirissa is known for whale watching, Parrot Rock and Coconut Tree Hill.

The Coastal Line runs along the shore through all three towns; the Matara-Beliatta extension opened in April 2019, though the line is not electrified. The Southern Expressway's Galle-Matara section has been open since 2014, with Imaduwa the interchange serving Ahangama, about 10 km away, and Mirissa about 13 km from the Kokmaduwa interchange. The road journey from Colombo runs to roughly 130 to 150 km, and Koggala Airport has scheduled flights to Colombo. None of the three towns has its own hospital, and the coast road can be slow through the built-up sections in peak season.

Schools along the strip include Siddhartha College and Arafa National College in Weligama, Mirissa Madhya Maha Vidyalaya, and Rohana Vidyalaya in Ahangama. The nearest hospitals are Galle Teaching Hospital at Karapitiya and Matara District General Hospital. Cargills Food City branches in Weligama and Mirissa and a Lanka Sathosa outlet in Weligama cover everyday groceries. Daily life here centres on the beach, the surf breaks and the run of restaurants and cafes along the coast road, with larger shopping and hospital care meaning a trip to Galle or Matara.

The Southern Expressway's Galle-Matara section and the Coastal Line's Matara-Beliatta extension are both already-completed infrastructure rather than new projects, and no further dated development is recorded for this stretch of coast beyond what is already open. New residential developments along the strip are listed further down this page.

This stretch of coast tends to suit holiday-home and second-home buyers, including overseas buyers, who typically acquire property here on long-term leases rather than freehold and should take independent legal advice on the terms of any listing. It also tends to suit surfers and long-stay visitors drawn to the breaks at Ahangama and Midigama, and buyers wanting a base near Mirissa and Weligama's beach-tourism economy.
