Vavuniya is a city in Vavuniya District in the Northern Province, run by a Municipal Council. It sits at a meeting point of communities: Sinhalese live mainly to the south of the city and Tamils to the north, and it also has a large Muslim population.
The town has been known since ancient times. Before the civil war less than 100,000 people lived in the whole district, because so much of it was forested. In earlier days the area was known as Vanni, after the abundance of Vanni trees, and it was ruled by the Vanni chieftains before the Dutch arrived.
Today Vavuniya is a busy trading and transport town. Its railway station is on the northern line, and the Security Forces Headquarters for the Wanni region is based here.
