Battaramulla

Battaramulla is a suburb in the Colombo District, on the Diyawanna Oya wetlands about 8.4 km from Colombo Fort by road, immediately east of Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte. It is split between two local authorities: the Kaduwela Municipal Council, whose Battaramulla North and Battaramulla South wards cover most of the area, and a small section attached to the neighbouring Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte Municipal Council. The name is said to come from bat-tota-mulla, "cooked rice-landing-corner", after a ferry landing on the Diyawanna Oya in the Kotte kingdom era.

Battaramulla is best known as a government administrative centre. The Sethsiripaya complex, the Defence Headquarters Complex and several passport and immigration offices are based here, and the Parliament of Sri Lanka sits on an island in the Diyawanna Oya just south of the area, opened in 1982. The National War Memorial and the Battaramulla Folk Art Centre (Ape Gama) are also in the area, and this concentration of offices keeps weekday footfall high.

The B240 New Kandy Road and Parliament Road (AB15) run through the area, with Pelawatte Road (B47) branching off towards Pelawatte and Malabe. There is no railway station in Battaramulla; the nearest, Cotta Road, is roughly 5 km away, so bus route 171 from Colombo Fort and private transport carry most commuters. Lanka Metro Transit, the new state bus operator, is headquartered at Sethsiripaya and began pilot operations from Makumbura in April 2026; its published route map includes services that run via Battaramulla, though the wider seven-route network was still being phased in through September 2026.

Diyatha Uyana, a lakeside park with a floating restaurant, sits at the Polduwa junction, and the Beddagana Wetland Park boardwalks are a few kilometres away on the Kotte side of the Diyawanna Oya. Schools include the Overseas School of Colombo in neighbouring Pelawatte, Sri Subhuthi Central College and Indrajothi Vidyalaya, established in 1905; Sri Jayewardenepura General Hospital is a short drive away in Thalapathpitiya. A Cargills Food City and an Arpico Super Centre cover everyday shopping on the New Kandy Road frontage.

Government building work has continued around Sethsiripaya, and Lanka Metro Transit's move into the area has added a new layer of bus infrastructure alongside the older Parliament precinct. New residential developments in Battaramulla are listed further down this page.

The concentration of ministries, the Defence Headquarters and passport offices means Battaramulla tends to suit civil servants and professionals with business in the government sector, along with families who want a quieter, waterside setting that is still a short drive from central Colombo.
