Thalawathugoda

Thalawathugoda is a locality in the Colombo District, about 16 km from Colombo Fort by road, on the Borella–Kottawa road next to Battaramulla and Pelawatte. The Diyawanna Oya (Parliament Lake) forms its boundary with Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte to the north-west, with Hokandara to the east and Pannipitiya to the south.

The area is best known for Diyasaru Park, a 60-acre wetland park managed by the Sri Lanka Land Reclamation and Development Corporation on land that was paddy field before part of it was used for the Parliament lake and, later, dredge material. It was relaunched to the public in October 2017 and now holds boardwalks, a bird-watching tower and a butterfly garden, with more than 80 recorded species of wetland birds. Its position on the edge of the Parliament precinct has shaped the area's growth from farmland into a residential suburb.

Talawatugoda Road (B368), Pannipitiya Road (B47) and the Hokandara–Thalawathugoda Road meet close to the centre of the area. There is no railway station in Thalawathugoda itself; the nearest are Maharagama, about 4.6 km away, and Nugegoda, about 7.1 km away, so most journeys are made by bus or private transport rather than rail. The area sits between the Kottawa interchange of the Southern and Outer Circular Expressways to the south and the Parliament/Battaramulla road network to the north, without a direct expressway entry of its own.

Schools include Agramathya College, i-GATE College and Vidura College, and Hemas Hospital, a private multi-speciality hospital, is based in the area itself; Sri Jayawardenepura General Hospital is a short drive away in Thalapathpitiya. Capital Mall and a SPAR supermarket cover everyday shopping, and Diyasaru Park's boardwalks and bird hide are the main local green space, alongside the wider Diyawanna Oya waterfront shared with Kotte.

Hemas Hospital's Thalawathugoda facility and the continuing build-out of Diyasaru Park's visitor facilities are the area's main recent infrastructure projects, alongside the general residential construction that has followed the suburb's growth around the Parliament precinct. The mix of a private hospital, established schools and quick road access to Battaramulla's government offices tends to suit families and professionals who work in or near the Parliament/Sethsiripaya area and want a greener, lower-density suburb within reach of central Colombo.
