Borella is the largest suburb in Colombo and is represented by divisional code 8, so you will also see it written as Colombo 08. It is a multi-religious and multi-ethnic area, home mainly to Sinhalese and Tamil communities and to Burghers, Sri Lankan Moors and others.

The settlement dates from the 15th century, when it was a village on a cart track from the port of Colombo to Kotte. The Borella municipal market was built in 1910, and Borella was once the terminus of Colombo's old tramway.

Sports are a big part of the area: it has the P. Sara Oval and the Tamil Union Cricket and Athletic Club, and the Royal Colombo Golf Club, founded in 1879, which is the oldest in the country and one of the oldest in Asia. There are many well-known schools, including Wesley College and Devi Balika Vidyalaya, and Colombo's main cemetery and crematorium, Kanatte, is located here.
