Dematagoda

Dematagoda, Colombo 9, lies in the north-east of the city along Baseline Road (Dr Danister de Silva Mawatha), between Borella and Maradana to the south-west and Kolonnawa to the north-east, inside the Colombo Municipal Council area.

The suburb grew up around the railway: Sri Lanka Railways' workshops and yard are based here, and Dematagoda has its own station on the line out of Colombo Fort. Its other well-known landmark is Orion City, an IT park on Baseline Road established in 2009 that has since grown to house dozens of technology and other firms across several office towers.

Dematagoda station connects directly to Colombo Fort, and Baseline Road and Maradana stations are both within a couple of kilometres. Baseline Road is the main through route, carrying heavy traffic toward Borella and Maradana at peak times, and there is no expressway interchange nearby. An elevated highway from the New Kelani Bridge to Athurugiriya, approved in 2021 with an access point planned at Dematagoda, has not yet been built and should be treated as a proposal rather than a firm date.

Several long-established schools sit within a kilometre or two, including Wesley College, Nalanda College, St. John's College, Ananda College and Zahira College, and Lady Ridgeway Hospital for Children, the National Hospital of Sri Lanka and De Soysa Hospital for Women are all close by. For everyday shopping there is a supermarket in Dematagoda itself and a public market on Baseline Road toward Borella.

Beyond Orion City's ongoing use and the proposed elevated highway link, no other major project is currently confirmed for the immediate area. New residential developments in Dematagoda are listed further down this page.

The concentration of schools makes Dematagoda a common search area for families, while its IT park and direct rail link to Fort tend to suit people working in technology or commuting daily into the city centre.
