Fort, or Colombo 01, is the central business district and financial centre of Colombo. It holds the Colombo Stock Exchange and the World Trade Centre, the Bank of Ceylon headquarters, the General Post Office, hotels and many government departments and offices. Fort, or Colombo 01, is the central business district and financial centre of Colombo. It holds the Colombo Stock Exchange and the World Trade Centre, the Bank of Ceylon headquarters, the General Post Office, hotels and many government departments and offices.

The area was known as Kolonthota and was the site of the first Portuguese landings in the early 16th century. The Portuguese turned the trading post into a fortified base and harbour, later taken over by the Dutch and the British, and the name Fort comes from that history.

Along the foreshore is the Galle Face Green promenade, laid out in 1859 under Governor Sir Henry George Ward.
