Kalkudah is a coastal village in Batticaloa District, Eastern Province, sharing a bay with Pasikudah on Sri Lanka's east coast. It sits about 35 km north-west of Batticaloa town and a few kilometres from Valaichchenai, its nearest inland town.
The area is known for the shallow, reef-sheltered water at Kalkudah and Pasikudah beaches. Tourism here was set back by the 2004 tsunami and by the civil conflict, and the coast has been rebuilt as a resort area since around 2009. Resorts along the bay include Amaya Beach and Sun Siyam Pasikudah, and a smaller boutique property, Kalkudah Beach House, opened in April 2025.
Colombo is roughly 286 km away, a drive of around five to six hours, Batticaloa town is about 35 km away and Trincomalee is about 110 km to the north. Cinnamon Air flies Colombo to Batticaloa in around 45 minutes, and Batticaloa Airport itself is roughly 32 km from Kalkudah. The nearest railway station is at Valaichchenai on the Batticaloa Line, a few kilometres inland; Kalkudah and Pasikudah themselves have no station and no expressway access, so a car or taxi, or the train to Valaichchenai followed by a short local transfer, are the practical ways in.
Valaichchenai is the service town for banks, a base hospital and Valaichchenai Hindu College, while Batticaloa town, further away, has the district's teaching hospital. A handful of restaurants directly at Pasikudah, including Rupsy's Sea Food Restaurant and Captain Seafood Restaurant, serve the resort strip. Daily life here centres on the beach and the resorts, with residents travelling to Valaichchenai or Batticaloa for banking, larger shopping and specialist healthcare.
Investment in the coast has continued since the post-2009 rebuilding, with newer small properties such as the boutique Kalkudah Beach House opening in April 2025 alongside the established resorts. No further named infrastructure projects are recorded for the immediate area. New residential developments in and around Kalkudah are listed further down this page.
Kalkudah tends to suit holiday-home and second-home buyers drawn to a quiet beach setting with sheltered swimming, and people with ties to the area's small hospitality sector, given the distance from Colombo and the limited local services that rule out everyday commuting.
