Moratuwa is a coastal city about 20 km south of Colombo Fort by road, on Galle Road, wedged between the Indian Ocean and Bolgoda Lake. It borders Ratmalana and Dehiwala to the north and Panadura to the south, and four bridges cross Bolgoda Lake on its eastern side.
The city has been a centre of furniture-making and woodwork since the colonial period, when it supplied both everyday and decorative furniture to Colombo, and the trade remains an important part of the local economy today. Moratuwa is also home to the University of Moratuwa at Katubedda, and to established schools including Prince of Wales' College and St. Sebastian's College. Holy Emmanuel Church, built between 1857 and 1860, and the De Soysa (Tyronne Fernando) Stadium are long-standing local landmarks.
Galle Road runs the length of Moratuwa, and the Coastal Line has five stations here: Angulana, Lunawa, Moratuwa, Koralawella and Egodauyana. The nearest Southern Expressway entry, at Kottawa, is about 20 km away by road, a similar distance to central Colombo itself, so most journeys to the city still rely on Galle Road rather than the expressway.
K-Zone at Katubedda is the main shopping centre, alongside supermarkets along Galle Road. Bolgoda Lake gives the city a stretch of inland water for walking and boating, and the beach runs along the ocean side of Galle Road. University students and staff add to demand for rented rooms and flats around Katubedda.
In May 2026 the Transport Minister said an extension of Marine Drive to Moratuwa is planned alongside the Port Access Road project, though this remains at the planning and feasibility stage, with no length or date yet published. New residential developments in Moratuwa are listed further down this page.
Moratuwa tends to suit buyers connected to its furniture trade and university, families wanting a coastal city with its own schools and hospital, and commuters who are comfortable with a longer run into central Colombo along Galle Road in exchange for more space and a lake or seafront setting.
