Dehiwala sits on Colombo's southern coastal edge, about 11 km from Colombo Fort by road along Galle Road (A2). It falls within the Dehiwala-Mount Lavinia Municipal Council in Colombo District, bordered by the Colombo Municipal Council area across the Dehiwala canal to the north and by Mount Lavinia to the south. Sub-areas such as Kalubowila, Kohuwala, Nedimala and Attidiya give the suburb a mix of older lanes, busy junctions and newer apartment blocks closer to the sea.

The suburb's best-known landmark is the National Zoological Gardens, founded in 1936 and one of the larger zoos in Asia, with an elephant arena, walk-through aviaries and a reptile house. Dehiwala grew out of villages that were once part of the Kingdom of Kotte, and the name is thought to come from the lime-tree groves that stood here. The suburb today combines this older heritage with a stretch of coastline near the Mount Lavinia boundary that is lined with small hotels and beach restaurants.

Galle Road runs the length of Dehiwala, and the suburb has its own stop on the Coastal Line, about 12 km from Colombo Fort by rail. The nearest Southern Expressway entry is at Kottawa, around 12 km away by road, and there is no expressway link inside Dehiwala itself. Galle Road carries heavy traffic through the suburb's junctions at peak hours, and the coastal railway through Dehiwala is still diesel-worked, though electrification has been proposed (see below).

Daily life here runs along Galle Road and its side streets. Holy Family Convent and the Presbyterian Girls' National School serve local families, and S. Thomas' College is a short distance south in Mount Lavinia. Colombo South Teaching Hospital in nearby Kalubowila is one of the larger government hospitals in the district. Attidiya Bird Sanctuary gives residents a stretch of wetland to walk beside, and Dehiwala's own beach, plus Mount Lavinia's beach just south, put the sea within easy reach.

Zoo authorities began an annual programme of enclosure and pathway upgrades in 2026, continuing into 2027, alongside work to move overhead wiring underground. Separately, a June 2026 government plan lists the Coastal Line between Colombo Fort and Panadura, which runs through Dehiwala, among the corridors due to begin conversion to electric trains from 2027, though no construction had started at the time of writing. New residential developments in Dehiwala are listed further down this page.

Dehiwala tends to suit buyers who want an established, built-up suburb close to the sea rather than a newly developing one: families drawn to its schools and the zoo, hospital staff looking for a short commute to Kalubowila, and commuters who use the Coastal Line or Galle Road to reach central Colombo.
