Nugegoda is a large suburb in Colombo District, about 10 km from Colombo Fort by road along High Level Road (A4). It lies just south of Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte and Maharagama and north-east of Dehiwala-Mount Lavinia, and falls under the Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte Divisional Secretariat.

The suburb works as one of south Colombo's busiest commercial and education centres, built around a bus stand, a shopping complex and a long-running market. The University of Sri Jayewardenepura, based at Gangodawila and tracing back to a Buddhist pirivena founded in 1873 before becoming a university in 1958, is based here, along with a large number of schools and tuition classes.

High Level Road (A4) is the main route through Nugegoda, carrying traffic over both the Nugegoda flyover and the Kohuwala flyover, which opened in July 2024. Three stations on the Kelani Valley railway line, at Nugegoda, Pangiriwatte and Udahamulla, serve the area, with a timetabled Colombo Fort journey of around 30 minutes. Despite the flyovers, High Level Road still sees heavy congestion at peak hours, and the nearest Southern Expressway entry, at Kottawa, is about 10 km away.

Sri Jayewardenepura General Hospital and Winlanka Hospital both serve the area, and Nawala Road, on the Kotte side, has the Urban Wetland Park and the Ananda Samarakoon open-air theatre for green space and public events. Day-to-day shopping runs from Nugegoda's own market and an Arpico Supercentre through to smaller shops along High Level Road.

In June 2026 the Cabinet approved electrifying the Kelani Valley Line between Maradana and Makumbura as part of a wider suburban rail electrification programme, alongside the Coastal and Main lines; the plan targets an initial phase from 2027, though no cost or firm timeline has been published. New residential developments in Nugegoda are listed further down this page.

Nugegoda tends to suit buyers who want a well-connected, established commercial suburb: university staff and students near Sri Jayewardenepura, professionals commuting to central Colombo by rail or High Level Road, and families drawn to the concentration of schools and tuition classes in the area.
