The town lies on the edge of the Western Province, bordering the Sabaragamuwa Province, and the Kelani Valley railway line ends at Avissawella Railway Station. It is known for the nearby Kumari waterfall, and the Seethawaka river, a tributary of the Kelani river, flows past the town.
In the late 1990s the Seethawaka Export Promotion Zone was set up here, and the town has been turning into an industrial centre since, with its population rising as workers moved in.
