It is on the bank of the Pusweli Oya, on high ground surrounded by marshland, and is part of the Avissawella electorate. The town is thought to have started in the 16th century as a camp site for the forces of the Seethawaka Kingdom, at the point where the Arukwathu Oya joins the Pusweli Oya.…
Padukka is a town in Colombo District, Western Province, about 33 km east of Colombo. It is on the bank of the Pusweli Oya, on high ground surrounded by marshland, and is part of the Avissawella electorate.
The town is thought to have started in the 16th century as a camp site for the forces of the Seethawaka Kingdom, at the point where the Arukwathu Oya joins the Pusweli Oya. Legend says its name comes from the Portuguese army resting here under the Naa (iron wood) trees after its defeat by King Rajasinghe's army at the nearby Hanwella Fort; some of those trees still stand at the town's rest house.
Padukka was also part of the Hewagam Korale, the division that supplied soldiers in the wars against the Portuguese, and the names of nearby villages still reflect the history of the Seethawaka kingdom.
