Homagama is a town in Colombo District, Western Province, and its own Divisional Secretariat area under the Homagama Pradeshiya Sabha. It sits on the A4 Colombo–Avissawella road about 24 km south-east of Colombo Fort, bordering Kottawa to the west and Kahathuduwa to the south-west.

The town has grown into an education and research centre. NSBM Green University, with about 10,000 students on a campus of roughly 26 acres, and the Buddhist and Pali University of Sri Lanka both sit at Pitipana, alongside the Sri Lanka Institute of Nanotechnology's science park. Homagama's older economic base is manufacturing, with plants including a long-established biscuit factory and a battery company still operating in the area.

The A4 gives a direct run into Colombo and on to Avissawella further south-east, and the Southern Expressway can be joined about 4 to 5 km away at Kottawa, with a second interchange at Kahathuduwa a little further on. A station on the Kelani Valley line serves the town, though the line is single track, diesel-worked and showing its age. Bus services run along the A4 all day, and that same road carries the town's peak-hour congestion.

Daily shopping and errands are centred on Homagama Junction, where a public market, several supermarkets and the main bus stand sit within a short walk of each other, with a second cluster of shops around Pitipana for anyone connected to the university campuses. Base Hospital Homagama covers government healthcare, and the Makumbura Multimodal Transport Centre a few kilometres north links residents to longer-distance buses and the expressway network. There is little dedicated green space or water frontage inside the town itself.

By May 2026, land identification and acquisition were under way for a modernisation of the Kelani Valley line between Maradana and Avissawella, which covers Homagama among seven affected divisions. A short distance away at Kahathuduwa, the Cabinet approved the start of procurement in July 2026 for the first phase of a new expressway running toward Ratnapura, which is expected to improve road access from this side of Homagama once it is built. New residential developments in the area are listed further down this page.

Homagama tends to suit staff and students connected to NSBM, the Buddhist and Pali University and SLINTEC, along with commuters who want reasonably quick Southern Expressway access without living in central Colombo. It is also a common search area for buyers looking for a larger plot than is easy to find nearer the city, since the town still has room to build.
