Kahathuduwa

Kahathuduwa is a small town in the Homagama Divisional Secretariat area of Colombo District, Western Province, on the B84 Colombo–Horana road. Colombo Fort is about 25.7 km away by road, and the town borders Homagama to the north-east and Piliyandala to the west.

The town's defining feature is its expressway interchange rather than any single landmark. The Kahathuduwa Interchange is Exit 2 of the Southern Expressway, 5.9 km from the Kottawa entrance, and it also forms the starting point of a planned expressway toward Ratnapura. A golf resort with an apartment and villa development sits beside the interchange, and the surrounding area is otherwise a mix of smallholdings and newer housing.

Public transport is the town's weak point. There is no railway station in Kahathuduwa itself; Kottawa, about 8.5 km away, is the nearest. Bus route 120 runs through the area, but there is no practical combined bus-and-train option to central Colombo, so most residents drive, using the expressway or the B84 and connecting roads.

Everyday needs are covered by a supermarket and small hospitals close to the interchange, with a wider choice of shops, schools and clinics in Homagama and Piliyandala a short drive away. There is no significant green space, park or water frontage inside Kahathuduwa itself.

The main change under way is road infrastructure. In July 2026, the Cabinet approved the start of procurement for the first phase of a new expressway running from Kahathuduwa to Ingiriya, which includes a system interchange with the Southern Expressway at Kahathuduwa; the wider route toward Ratnapura remains at an earlier planning stage and land acquisition had not begun. Kahathuduwa tends to suit buyers who want expressway access above all else and are prepared to drive for most other trips, including commuting toward Colombo's southern suburbs or further down the Southern Expressway. It is also a common search area for people drawn to golf-resort living rather than a conventional town centre.
